Is LinkedIn your new super weapon?

Is LinkedIn your new super weapon?

4

Before you start, clear your mind of any previous misconceptions you may have had about LinkedIn.

LinkedIn has come a long way from being just an online resume. In 2025, it’s one of the most powerful (and free) tools for small business owners to connect, grow, and actually generate leads.

Whether you’re a tradie, solicitor, consultant, or service-based pro, if you’re not tapping into LinkedIn to build your business network… you’re leaving serious opportunity on the table.

But never fear, Hive is here and we’re here to help you fix that.

While LinkedIn isn’t about cold sales or robotic “let’s connect” messages anymore, but has moved into a platform where real conversations are happening with people you actually want to work with – decision-makers, industry peers, and potential clients.

Think of it as the digital version of a networking breakfast (just without the awkward coffee queue and ‘hellos’).

Done right, LinkedIn helps you:

  • Build credibility in your niche
  • Stay top-of-mind with your audience
  • Open doors to collaborations, referrals, and leads

Unsure on where to start? We’ve got you covered.

Your profile is your handshake. If it’s not optimised, you’re not making a great first impression.

Wanna know what you should do to kick off your LinkedIn journey? We suggest:

1. Adding a friendly, professional photo (ditch the car selfie)

2. Writing a clear headline in your bio (aka your 3 point bio)

3. Use your “About” section to talk about how you help, not just what you do

4. Add featured work, testimonials, or case studies to really build out your profile so people can see what you’ve worked on in the past

5. And start sharing your thoughts by creating your very first post.

And here’s some super easy wins you can start creating content on LinkedIn right now that are low effort, but high impact:

  • Have some fun with Polls
  • Organise a Live Q&A about a certain topic that’s of interest in your network
  • Sharing PDFs of your services, whitepapers, case studies or other communications you’ve created
  • Reshare a thought from someone else and include your own commentary
  • Aim for 5-10 new connections (that are relevant to you and your business), introduce yourself and connect with them.

I’m confident that I can do this… What now?

Easy! Start building your network the smart way. Do you need thousands of followers? NO.

You need the right ones. Here’s how to start:

1. Connect intentionally

Search for people you’ve worked with, local business owners, industry professionals, or even clients you’d love to work with. When sending a request, always personalise it:

“Hey Jane, loved your post on customer service. Would love to connect.” or

“Hey Greg, I see we have some similar connections and I think there may be an opportunity for us to collaborate together. Would love to chat more about this.”

2. Engage regularly

Comment on posts, share your opinion, and add value. You’ll build visibility without needing to post every day. Think of LinkedIn like a web – as you continue to interact, you’ll appear in feeds of others who are connected to your connections and your LinkedIn web begins to widen.

3. Start posting (yes, we’re repeating ourselves here)

You don’t need to be a copywriter – just someone with something great to share, like :

  • A client win or before/after story
  • Tips or lessons from your week
  • Your take on a trending industry topic

These small moments build trust which is the golden currency of business.

4. Don’t forget your DMs.

Once you’re connected and have engaged a bit, move the convo to the inbox.

For example:

“Hi Paul, I saw your recent post on XYZ. I’ve faced similar challenges and found something that has worked for me. I’m happy to share what worked if helpful to you?”

No hard sell. Just value.

Ultimately, you don’t need to be a LinkedIn pro. You just need to start. And if you ever get stuck, well… we’re just a DM away 😉
