Why Small Business Owners Should Be on LinkedIn (and How to Make It Work for You)

If you’re a small business owner and you’ve been sleeping on LinkedIn, it’s time to wake up. Forget the myth that LinkedIn is ‘just for job hunters.’
In 2025, LinkedIn has evolved into one of the most powerful platforms for building authority, generating leads, and connecting with key decision-makers and prospect customers.
And the best part? The organic reach is still far stronger than what you’ll find on other social platforms for these B2B style interactions.
At Hive, we’ve seen firsthand how small businesses can thrive by using LinkedIn strategically, and it doesn’t have to take hours a day. With the right tactics, even the busiest tradie or service provider can start seeing results.
Why LinkedIn Matters for Business Growth
Quick Wins to Boost Your LinkedIn Presence
1. Use Polls to Start Conversations
Polls aren’t just fun but they are data gold. It’s super easy to do (and free). Ask questions about pain points or preferences to spark engagement and learn more about your audience. Take those insights and run with them!
Take these insights to curate your next blog, create an ad campaign using these key findings or jump in front of the camera to address the pain points (and how you can help solve it!).
Hive Tip: Instead of asking ‘What’s your favourite coffee?’ ask ‘What’s the #1 thing that slows down your workday?’
2. Ditch the Grid and Create Carousels as PDFs
Uploading multi-page content as a PDF carousel looks clean and performs 1.9x better than regular posts. Share tips, step-by-step guides, or even before-and-after project photos.
And the best part? You don’t have to start from scratch. Anything that you have already will most likely be able to be created into this format. At Hive, we’re not about reinventing the wheel…. We prefer to work smarter and use the content we have already to share in other ways.
Hive Tip: Turn your top-performing Instagram posts into a LinkedIn carousel. As we said, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel.
3. Be Strategic with Comments
Leaving 10–20 meaningful comments (10+ words each – yes, we’re being specific) a day can boost your profile views by 50% and increase post reach by 10%. The wider you can cast your web in the LinkedIn-sphere, the more reach you will gain by getting in front of others who don’t *yet* follow you.
Hive Tip: Skip the ‘Great post!’ generic commentary and instead add value e.g., ‘Love this insight, we’ve seen the same trend with service-based businesses in Penrith.’ or ‘This is such a great way to share the information. I agree with your thoughts about XXX’.
4. Share Content Directly
Don’t wait for luck. Proactively DM your posts to media outlets, suppliers, or potential clients when relevant, especially if there’s an important industry event coming up, a new product or service added to your offering or a milestone coming up within your organisation.
This increases the chance of a share, a feature, or a meaningful connection which is great for your overall brand.
Hive Tip: If this doesn’t work the first time, do not be discouraged. Keep trying and be consistent with this approach if you’re looking to make an impact. And always ask yourself ‘If I was the end consumer, would I read this?’.
5. Play Smart With Video
Video doesn’t perform as strongly on LinkedIn compared to Instagram or TikTok. Instead, videos that you choose to share as a Reel or Tik Tok can be turned into really engaging infographics, carousels, and/or text-based posts that invite discussion.
6. You’re Allowed To Like Your Own Post
Like your own post (yes, really) for a small engagement boost. This will give you up to 5% uplift in engagement, encouraging others to do the same.
LinkedIn is no longer optional for small business owners who want to grow. Whether you’re a builder, a wellness provider, or a local service-based business, showing up with the right mix of content and engagement can transform your network, and your bottom line.
